Everyone likes surprises, right?
Surprises can be great, but they also take away one of the greatest joys of life. Anticipation.
Imagine you want to celebrate your grandmother’s birthday. Someone suggests a Surprise Party. Someone else with a little more brains says, wait, we don’t want to give grandma a coronary! And someone else with yet a little more brains adds, also, imagine how great grandma will feel the entire time up to a party that we tell her about! From the moment she is told about the party until the moment that party begins, she will be waiting for the party , anticipating the celebration and there is a beautiful joy in that anticipation.
QED.
Our modern, electronically advanced, instant access world has snatched much of the anticipation from our world. No longer do we wait for the morning paper anxious to see the headlines of the news, or read the recap of the game or analyze some business news. It is all available to us immediately. I miss the morning paper, but why in the world should I wait 14-18 hours to read the news that is available this very minute!?
There is a vestige of anticipation that remains. The “Apple Event”.
For the last 8 years Apple has made announcements of new products a study in anticipation. Rumors and speculation abound for weeks prior to the event make us salivate in anticipation of some shiny, new gadget that we all will “need to have”.
This morning Apple announced a new product that has been anticipated for 14 years. Even if we don’t buy the product, even if we are not impressed with the product and have absolutely no use for the product, the anticipation has been so much fun.
If the iPad had been announced with no fanfare, no anticipation, no hype, no build-up, we would have not had the fun and joy of waiting for it.
It is a great reminder that sometimes the joy is in the anticipation. Enjoy every moment that leads up to the most exciting events in our lives. It will certainly make our lives richer.
Also, it will makes sure we don’t give grandma a coronary…
